ARHHH Oil buzzer!!!mk2 breadvan

Featured Replies

Hi i've got a mk2 polo cl 1.3 and the oil pressure warning light and buzzer keep going off. the only way to stop it is to switch the car off , which is obviously crap. could anybody help me with this problem??? i was thinking of shorting it or something so it just doesn't work but i don't know where the bloody thing is.

thanks Olly

Does your car have a lambda sensor? Mk2s don't normally, but a busted sensor sometimes sets this buzzer off.

Go into more detail about how it happens, and of course confirm that your oil is fine for us.

if you read this before my PM the oil pressure switch is in the back of the cylinder head, both my mk2s had this problem, pissing oil out of the switch. also if the wire falls off and shorts it will buzz. might pop round at the weekend

i had the same on my mk1 Golf (1.3 GF engine code)

i changed a pressure sensor on the cylinder head & it's been fine ever since

I managed to track the buzzer down to the left hand side of the speedo dial. Just whipped the clocks out disconnect/distroyed the buzzer, no more problems!!!

Not ideal I know but did the job!

hi i was wondering if you could give me a bit more info on how you wiped the oil pressure thing of the dsh clocks???

Any help would be great.

Thanks Olly

If pressure is fine and sensors are working and cable is not bust(high) or shorting to earth (low) and dash-loom connector is making good contact it'll be the J114 'oil pressure monitor control unit'.

Whip (not wipe) the clocks out . two screws at the top, disconect speedo cable behind, two screws left and right, lvere forward, disconnect dash loom plug botton right, lever front right forwards, point downwards, comes out to the right past the stalk... or remove the steering wheel if its too tight for comfort.

The J114 L shaped circuit board is inside the speedo (accessible by four cross head screws) connected by 6 pins to outer foil circuit.

Remove/replace the board: VDO and Motometer are interchangeable.

May aswell replace dash bulbs while doing it.. you'll be remving one dash lightbulb and bending back the circuit foil to get the speedo out.

Or in some circumstances cutting one wire is enough:

The module has live and earth, low pressure sensor in, high pressure sensor in, tacho speed signal in and LED out, which corresponds with the 6 pins on the J114 L shaped board inside the speedo.

If I can identify which one is the 'tacho speed in' by tracing the circuit board on the back of the clocks I'm going to try cutting the track. Then the dreaded thing will think I'm never going over 2000rpm, but the real tacho and standard low pressure warning will still work!

Done it...

I've cut the tacho signal to the J114. On my motometer clocks the rev counter signal (coil primary) connects to 'KL.1' (pin 5) on the dash connector and eventually reaches the J114 via a wire bridge second from left on the top of the speedo when looking at speedo face.

The J114 itself has the two oil pressure inputs 0,3 and 1,8 bar and signals marked 15, T, Z and V.

One goes out to the LED, one comes from the voltage regulator, one is Earth. The last one is the tacho signal. Cutting that wire bridge and the buzz is gone, the rev counter still works, and the low pressure indicator should still function. I've not done the drain teh sump with the engine running test, but disconnecting the blue wire lights the lamp (with ignition on but engine not started).

That's good enough for me. I think I will permanently wire my oil pressure guage because it looks cool and I don't trust VW electronics any longer.

Following on from the genius post above by dvderlm...here is a couple of photos to show the back of the clocks and the wire bridge to cut! Just cut the wire indicated by the tip of the screwdriver.

thanks for the pictures, and it was a very good post indeed by the heck owning gent above the dude above!

however, i cant help think that help this is avoiding a potentially serious issue here, and that is ensuring that you actually notice when theres an oil pressure problem, even if your driving at high speed with the tunes blaring!

i'd be getting it pressure tested as first port of call, if and only if thats OK,

then grounding either sensor to see if it stops the buzzer (wont stop the flashing light) and if so replacing said sensor.

if grounding the wire didnt work it would be case of tracing the wiring back to source (kindly highlighted by your pictures above), to identify the root of the problem

This isnt a clubpolo thread but it helped me when I was having buzzer issues, the oil pressure warning system is the same. It tells you how the system works, how you can test it, and how you can fix it :)
