This is probably really dumb but how do i change my headlight bulbs my hand wont fit between the battery and back casing of the headlights and all is says in the manual is that i have to have them replaced at a vw garage if anyone can help it would be money saving and appreciated !!!!! :-D

This is something that's been bugging me a lot recently. I haven't had to do this myself yet so can't answer your question directly, but there are a few threads kicking around where people talk about the best way to change the bulbs on the front. From what you've said about the battery being in the way, I'd say undo whatever's holding the battery in place and temporarily move the battery out of the way :)

But isn't it strange that it's illegal to drive with a dead bulb (even during the day when you're not using it) and yet car manufacturers make it nearly impossible for an average motorist to change a bulb themselves? It's the same with my mate's MG ZS and my Mazda 6 - there's just not enough space in the engine bay to get in and change a bulb. On the Mazda, the recommended method is to remove the bumper and take the headlight unit out, then change the bulb and reassemble. And yeah the manual also says it's a dealer serviceable item. For such a basic maintenance task, that's fucking nuts to make it so complicated. Are manufacturers really that desperate for franchised dealership chargeable hours that they design them into the car?

I assume you have a non-GTi.

The procedure:

Buy new bulbs H7 dipped beam (Recommend Osram Silverstars), H1 Main beam, W5W sidelight

Battery side:

Set electric lights to position 0 first.

Remove fusebox over battery

Undo terminals on battery and wrap to prevent accidental shorting

Undo battery securing bolt x1

Either push battery northwards or lift battery out

Undo back cover to light

Unclip light bulb

Remove bulb

Refit.

!do not touch the bulb glass at all

Otherside: you can gently squeeze your hand in the gap.
