is 425 a good price for a gearbox refurb including labour etc?

why not buy a 2nd hand gearbox, easily get one for £40, and if it breaks buy another, and another and another

still less than £425 bum hole notes!

You can pick a gt gearbox for about 50 quid.

hmmmm well i'll ring the garage tomorrow and see what they say. might just get it done for peace of mind but still its a lot of cash

if anybody sees a gt box for sale close to manc or preston if they could pm me the link or something i'd be mucho gratefull :)

i paid £500 for a recon g/box in my 16v, fitted...

There is a centre near me which does a brilliant job for about 150 quid and less.

i sent my g40 gearbox to jp race, had it rebuilt and had it delivered back to me for about 100 quid less thats including delivery both ways.

right I'm actually well pissed off

got rung up by the garage [hills one stop in manc]

oh yeah we fixed your gearbox and driveshaft (which is what he spent 20 mins telling me wasnt the problem before) then tried telling me to change the clutch while it was out

total work so far 700quid and wanted 821 quid for everything i was like seriously what the FUCK

i said it was the driveshaft etc I'm sooooo pissed off

any advice as to what i can do theres no way I'm paying that much money back id rather take my wheels n shit off and leave them with the fucking car money grabbing dicks

They are being seriously cheeky if they do £800 of work without checking before hand. Is the car even worth £800?

How much do you like your car? I'm guessing allot. You wont want to give it up to them.

Go straight to the top of the food chain and complain. You might get offered the choice to pay in installments. Its very unprofessional and unreasonable of them to carry out such a large or indeed any amount of work before checking with you first.

You could just borrow the money and never go back to the garage...

Exactly. If they won't let you have the car back then you need to take it further. Do NOT pay them a penny if you never instructed them to do the work or had a quote beforehand.

think she got my local garage to ring them up today, need to find out the result when she gets back from work

next time i get breakdown cover I'm gonna make sure it doenst have a 10 mile towing limit, RAC wanted £150 to tow it back to preston from oxford road in manc

Out of curiosity what was the original problem?

outer cv joint broke, the other side went at xmas so i knew what it was

he was adament that it wasnt this and was the box but then was like but they did that aswell even though it was meant to be the box :/

It's a piss poor garage that can't diagnose the difference between a faulty CV joint and gearbox!

What work do they state they have done and at what hourly rate?

i think a quick call to 'trading standards' is whats called for.

if you didn't agree for the work to be done, i don't see how they can expect you to pay.

it's like going to get a stone chip repaired and them re-spraying your whole car !!
