Cheap 'n cheerful security idea

Featured Replies

1/ I never use the Mk2's parking lights. Disconnect the lights from the indicator switch and you've got a switch that will turn 12v ON when you turn the ignition OFF. 2/ A quick search on the Net will turn up any number of DIY circuits to make an LED flash once every 2 seconds. 3/ Mount an LED inside a bezel (make it look good) somewhere prominent in the car, hook it all up and hey presto - just leave the indicator switch down when you leave the car and it looks like you have an alarm fitted. Better than nothing? Whaddayareckon?

to be fair, that is pretty ingenious but seems you would go to all that effort, wouldn't it be just as easy to fit a security system?

My dad had something similar to that on his old BMW.

but his flashed when you turned the ignition off.

i think you can buy blinking LED's from maplin!

be better just to get an alarm tbh

What other circuit is there that turns on when the ignition is turned off? You could use logic on the LED board to sense when the ignition had turned off but it starts getting complicated then!

Maplins do indeed have flashing LEDs but they flash twice a second, which wouldn't look right. Once every 2 seconds is what you want.

Face it, if someone determined wants your car he's going to get it - alarm or no alarm - this was just a Sunday nite idea!

i thought you were going to suggest a master cut out switch going to the coil so the engine wouldnt fire unless the "heated rear screen" was on.

A fine idea! Good man, you're getting into the spirit of this!

I used to have a switch that went to the starter motor, just tucked the switch under the dash.

run a led on mine...its wired to a switching realy so it turns on/off with the ign

the parking light wire goes live when you indicate as well...i tried that, infact theres no need to leave the indicator on when parked the grey wire at the ign switch is live when the ign is off

Excellent - I'm going to do it!

if you want to do the relay...

get a 5 pin relay

fuesed live from back of fusebox to termanal 30.

termanal 85 to a good earth.

Ignition feed to terminal 86

insulate terminal 87---its not used

terminal 87A To LED + wire

earth the other led wire and you have a auto led

dont pay loads for a flashing led either, you should be able to find one for £1 or so

edit , or you could be extra flash and get a dual colour led...so its red when ign off...and green with ign on, just wire the green leg to term 87
