Noticed a problem over the last few days, but much worse this morning. Car starts and runs absolutely fine, running perfectly noraml low down in the revs and pulling away cleanly. Problem is that it just won't rev above about 3-3.5k. It just hits a brick wall. Its only over the last few days so I was wondering if it could perhaps be related to the fact its bloody freezing at the minute. Possibly old plug leads getting damp. But then I figured that it would probably affect it lower down in the revs as well. Other thing is I can hear the fuel pump running constantly when the engines running and I might be being paranoid but I'm not sure if I could hear it before.

I only bought the car as a runaround to get me through winter rather than using the bike so don't want to spend too much on it, might go as far as a basic service this weekend though.

Any ideas what might be up?

Does it miss fire or anything when hitting the 3K mark or does it just stop like a guvenour or rev limter?

Maybe just a good service changing plugs, leads, filters and oil would sort the problem.

It feels like its hitting a limiter, or suffering fuel starvation hence me being paranoid about being able to hear the pump.

It might just be that it needs a good service so I'll do leads, dizzy cap etc. this weekend and see if it makes a difference.

i had a similar prob with my flooded gt. it turned out to be caused by the rotten backbox, that had blocked up, so the gases werent able to escape. it was effectively working on the same principle used to restrict motorbikes!

It had some crappy chav 2 foot wide backbox on when I bought it so replaced it with a brand spanking new standard backbox so that shouldn't be a problem. Rest of it looks fairly new as far as the cat as well.

The cat fell off the downpipe a month or so ago though, split just where the pipe goes into the cat, so me and me mate welded it back up. Maybe a good excuse for a bypass pipe?

It's a '92 k plate. Yeah its got a cat (hence the whole thing of welding it back up when the down pipe parted company with the front of the cat)

Any ideas how much a cat bypass pipe would be? If its not a ridiculous amount I might throw one of those on.

errm cat by-pass as in a de-cat. well i know the cut off year for cars with cats is 1992, weather 92 cars can go with out a cat somone else will have to tell you.

Have a look round in the parts section, there are de-cats for sale every so often in there. I got mine for £50.

or you could get a second hand cat converter. but its up to you.

Cheers for that. Will try actually servicing it 1st and see if leads, plugs and all the other usual bits make a difference.

Check Ignition timing and replace Ignition components
