ok just wondering this as my spare bumpers going in for some smoothing tommorow, I'm losing the plate and thinkin of sliding it on the dash or else on the visor?

people tell me different things on whats legal some say yea you will be fine as long as its displayed! but others say thats no chance legal! is it up to the copper that pulls you? his discretion? or is there a law somewhere on this? thoughts.....

i think it depends on how good a mood the copper pulling you over is in.

ran mine in the window for a while, a copper once came up to me in asda and said i dint have a front bumper....pointed to it, he walked round the front of the car, said oh yeah was just the glare off the lights and walked off

others have got fines etc, so guess its just up to the copper.

was pulled today by traffic police (for having my rear plate in my window), let me off with just a warning and was sound but two things:

a) i thought it was only illegal at night due to it not being lit,

and

b) he didnt ask for any id, insurance etc instead just ask me to take a seat in the back, pulled up all the info on the in-car screen and said is that you, is that wher you llive etc..............

that cant be right can it, i coulda been anyone and just agreed.

At the moment I've got it sat on the dash aint been pulled yet but its early days! some seemed to turn a blind eye on the black plates till i went round a roundabout and one was sat waiting!

think its one wher it depends what there looking for that month

i remember when chrispy put that tinted plate on, had it one for bout an hour and the cops were out looking for un-insured drivers so paying more attention to plates etc.

Legal i think yeed to have a front and rear plate, with the rear plate lit up at night. It has to be proper font and spacing.

Depending on the copper and excuse you can get away with plate in window eg, someones go in the back of you and due to damage to boot, you plates in window.

Its the same risk as running german style plates however copper general take the view that " if you hiding something with you plates, what else are you hiding etc etc"

i think the best thing to do is keep a new pack of double sided sticky pads in your car too, if you get pulled just say your on the way back from the shop to buy the sticky pads cos the number plate flew off yesterday

As long as the front plate is visible from the front of the vehicle it is fine, rear plate MUST be illuminated. Not having it on the bumper might get you pulled over but I had a stick on plate on my Skoda (yeah I know) and that faced upwards, however, if you stood at the front of the car, you could read it. Obey the letter of the law, if not the spirit....

We get numerous Land Rovers at work with front plates on the dash, on the sun visors or on the roofracks.

from what iread up on its not legally aloud to be behind glass... but its down to the coppers discretion depends if hes C^&t or not i gues...lol

trade plates are put there

when i got pulled for having american plates he didnt say much about having the front one on the dash

and I've never been pulled specifically for having no plate on the front

just remember the only police who see it are going the opposite way :p lol

never had a problem running mine wedged between the rear view and the b pillar, been pulled a few times and they've never said anything about that, even got my car drugs raided with it up there and they checked everything on my car tyres etc and didnt say a thing about the plate. touch wood!

I thought your plate had to be on the furthest away part of the car or something

trade plates are put there

Mainly because if you put a trade plate on the outside of a car, the average time to it getting nicked is about 4 seconds.

i always thought it had to be infront of the front wheels...

had mine in window for 2 years never been pulled for it.

only been pulled with out one at all.

got pulled 2 weeks ago for having german plates copper said it was fine in the window but not in that style. 30 quid on spot fine :)

theres an old citreon with the front plate behind a glass/perspex cover between the headlights, so I'm not sure thats right.

Guidelines on how "number plates" should be displayed

All number plates including numbers those purchased through's sales scheme must be displayed in accordance with The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001 (obtainable from Her Majesty's Stationery Office).

Rules for the display of number plates are set out in law, briefly these are: -

* A number plate must be displayed at the front and rear of motor vehicles (with some exceptions).

* Number Plates must be easy to read and meet the British Standard.

* Lettering should be black on a white plate at the front and a yellow at the rear.

* The background surface should be reflex-reflecting but the characters must not.

* There are separate requirements for traditional number plates displayed on vehicles constructed before 1 January 1973.

* Lettering and spacing must be of a set size. They must conform to one of the groups shown at:- Number plates fitted after 1 September 2001 or Number plates fitted before 1 September 2001.

Number Plate Law

The law states that,

o You must not alter, rearrange or misrepresent the letters or numbers

o Characters must not be moved from one group to the other (e.g. A242 ABC must not be displayed as A242A BC).

Offences may result in any or all of the following:

o A fine of up to £1,000

o The registration mark may be WITHDRAWN

o The vehicle may FAIL the MOT test
