motorway driving is easy. If u are nervous about it then i would advise doing pass plus but if u dont want to spend money on that then basically just make sure u know everything thats going on around eg cars slowing in your blind spot. basically be observant. you will also find out everyone helps everyone else by moving over for cars that want to overtake and pulling out into the middle lane when approaching a entrance slip road to allow cars entering the motorway to do so safely

You won't gain confidence to drive on the motorways without doing it...take someone experienced with you and get it out the way!

I've been driving over 3 years... only been using motorways for a year and half as i had nightmares of driving on them.... best to get on them and take it easy as soon as, you'l end up having to use them one day anyway and they arent all that bad!

sooner you get on them the better.

if you avoid them from the start you will build up a bigger fear of them and it will get harder to get over it.

just go for it, have someone experienced sit with you.

It's easy enough. Have a read through the relevant bits of the highway code for a memory jogger, then go for a trial run at a quiet time (late evening for example). Getting someone level-headed to sit in with you can make you more comfortable.

I did the pass plus but it still took me a while to get on the motorway, and if I'm honest i still avoid if i can, which may become difficult if i want to attend shows this year lol. I made my dad come on the motorway with my Sheffield, i didnt know whether to speed up slow down or what he was that on edge, so make sure you take someone who isnt a nervous passenger or doesn't normally have a lead right foot themselves.

Its just those inital nerves, the only bit i hate is junctions, especially when i keep missing mine

And of course, if no-one has mentioned it before - make sure you get up to speed *before* joining the motorway. Look for a gap as soon as you can see the motorway, match speed as best you can and get out into the inside lane - nothing worse than someone pottering down the slip way and pulling out in front of you when you're doing 60-70mph....

You'll be fine - day after passing my test I had to drive into Bristol to get some car bits - ended up on the M32 at rushour trying to get back to Bath and I survived!

There is quite a difference between having a bump at 20mph in town...and hitting a lamp post at 90mph on a motorway...?

But the likelyness of crashing on a straight piece of empty motorway is alot less than crashing into something in a populated area?

Agreed, if i do hit anything at 90 on the motorway i am going to die and take anyone else around with me, but I'm pretty sure that would apply too even if i was going at 70

pass plus, they teach all sorts of good stuff and its resuring having a instructor sat next to you.

first time i went on by my self i didnt go to town, i just sat in the left lane kicked back for a few junctions. then start doing some over takes to get used to it.

join motorway

check mirrors move into middle lane then into fast lane

go as fast as possible in outside lane untill its your junction, mirror signal manouver then leave motorway

job done

Your point stands that it is less likely to happen...but if it does...the consequences are much greater. The difference between travelling at 60 and 90 are huge. It's much easier to get out a spot of bother at 60 as lower speeds are only a jab of the brake away...even in a Polo.

So did i!! Lol. At 100mph, it was during the day, so wasnt too busy, the weather was sunny. Just had to get it out of my system!!!

M'way driving is seriously easy. Just remember to keep checking mirrors, and remember that you dont have to steer very much at all to change lanes... Lol. The tinyest turn on the wheel moves the car over into the next lane easy enough. Lol.

i didn't have a car for a week after i passed my test as the garage had to tinker with it 1st as i wasn't happy about how it was running!

Drove to meet my mate in his metro, handbraked round a traffic island and parked next to him!

Didnt get to using a motorway for a couple of days though but it didnt really bother me. Can be abit scary when its real busy though so make sure you keep an eye on whats going on around you and just sit at 60 until you feel more confident.

Note: before i get complaints, i don't drive like a tool anymore. learnt my lesson years ago!

when i passed my test a few years ago, i done pass plus, the instructor took me round the M25, once i had been on that, it was easy!!!a few months after i was driving from norfolk to see my girlfriend in gloustershire every weekend, just take your time and stick to one lane if your nervous!!

About an hour after passing my test when i sorted insrance and stuff out i went straight onto the M60 on my own, had great fun, the highest speed i did in my lessons was 40, so i was excited and rushed my dad into insuring me as soon as i got home from my test .

That was last year :)

My driving instructor put me on the motorway last week............... is it sensible putting an L plate driver on it?
