Hello people,

I'm guessing a few people in here must have had some experience with one of these so i'm wondering if anyone can give me any info on what they think about the good old MK2 Golf GTI 8V.

Sort of made the decision that it would be a laugh to get one for her, mainly as i would be able to drive it too and with a bit of work they can look pretty sweet i think.

Just really want to know peoples feelings of them and the performance compared to my GT.

is it a kjet or digifant version? the kjet is a bit less complicated. the digifant is a bit more involved as its all run by ecu. i had no end of trouble with the electics in my digi. blew a few ecu's due to bad earths . performance is great for the power output. plenty of torque and short gearing. you never have to rev past 5k either as the performance is all low in the rev range

watch out for rust under the bodykit etc.

Thanks for the info mate. Not sure as of yet, all i know is that is sat on a H plate. A poke around in the engine bay and i should find out.

great cars imo, feel alot more sturdy than a mk3 polo.

I've got one as a daily- nothing more. It's nice to drive, feels solid and brakes are good (rear discs woop) but they are a bastard for niggles like for example MFA not working, stiff gear linkage due to worn bushes, window mechs breaking and general rot under the bodykit. (thankfully mine's been resprayed properly at some point so it's rot free) You really need to have a good look round it. Mine was stupidly cheap but has been mucked about with in really annoying ways by the previous owners! Wish it had just been standard as I've had to change loads to be happier with it. But then I would've paid 4 times at least what I paid if that had been the case.

Mine's really good on fuel as thankfully the engine has been looked after- get 70-80 miles out of a tenner. It's definately not a tootle round town car though, very different to a polo!

Don't think you'll find it THAT much quicker than a GT up to about 70 though.

Used to have an 8v a few years ago, had it for nearly 2 years and all it needed was a pair of tyres and a startermotor. Whish the 16v I have now was as good for not going wrong.

If its an H it should have big bumpers and will be digifant injection.

Just watch out for rust in the usual places, under the arches, bottoms of the doors, battery tray, the hatch the rear pannel and under the front window seal. Whatch out for high milers, seat boalster wear is common, as is crunching into 2nd gear.

All in all I thought it was a good car.

Did know you had a GTI now charlie.

Looked at a fair few in the past few days. Finding it hard too find a mint one at the mo though, alot seem to be having alot of minor problems. And I've found that the crunching in the 2nd gear very common! Is this easy to fix?

I think I'm going to stick to trying to find one off a a forum due to alot of ebay and autotrader time wasters. Plus i think the Girl Friend would rather pay a bit more to have one that isnt going to cause her too much hassel.

if the 2nd gear crunch is slight and only when cold a change to redline mtl gearoil often cures it....if not its rebuld the box time££££££

I've just got rid of one. Quicker than a GT and much more torque. The brakes and handling are a lot better too. I found it easy to work on and they do feel solid to drive. I would defiantly recommend them.

How much did you get rid of it for in the end?
