Mk3 spi AEE conversion

Featured Replies

is it just the inlet manifold that is the ball-acher on mpi GT's?

does it otherwise all bolt up ok?

I'm tinkering with the idea of an spi AEE conversion in my mk3 as i have a good AEE from a mk4 Polo in at work

any ideas?

Engine bolts in no problem, although only 2 of the the holes in the front can be used as the AEE block doesnt have the third lower bolt hole. Apparently using just the two holes is TUV approved. Some people weld the third hole onto the block with a bit off a scrapped block or i have heard of someone making up a plate which sits under the mount and picks up anoter bolt hole elsewhere on the block.

Manifolds are very different and dont line up. :-(

is it possible to use the AEE manifolds? are they spi or mpi when in the mk4 Polo/Felicia?

Use the manifold from an ABU code SPi engine.

Yeah, what steve said! You should be able to use the original polo SPI loom with the ABU ECU. If not, it might be possible to swap the chips in the ECUs over if both ECUs are early enough.

In theory the Mk3 Golf or whatever car you get the ECU from, the engine bay loom from that should plug into the Polo fusebox.

Just about anything VW from 90 spec Mk2 Golfs to pre-immobiliser Mk3 Golfs and other cars built at the same time will plug into each others fuse boxes.

Some wires would be different lengths, could cause problems.

I had thought of that but just guessed if it's for a Golf it will be long enough for a Polo

Not on a Mk.3 Polo though!

Just use all the Polo SPi wiring and use the standard 1.3 ECU and along with one of Alan's AAV chip upgrades and all will be fine.

Depends. For example, on the mk2 golf the coil is on the bulk head so the wiring is alot shorter...

No? Golf ABD ECU connected up fine to mine?

Ah yes.

I'll stay out of this now

The Golf ECU will clip in and run fine, but the box it comes in is much bigger on the Golf so may not fit into the confines of the Polo, unless you can remove it's innards and fit them into a Polo casing???

Depends if the PCBs are the same. i'd have thought the would be. Again could maybe swap the chips over if not. How much bigger is it?

wow, look like i have really started something here... lol

thanks for the advice guys! look like it could be a possibility..

What size engine is the ABU engine?

Edited by VeeDubGeezer

1598cc if thats what you mean? If you mean actual physical size, it's about an inch taller than a standard mk3 engine, but the other physical dimesions are the same.

Does the extra inch cause any hassle? I mean with bike carbs is it going to be a case of the bonnet not closing? I'm considering buying the engine and building it absolutely mint in storage for a few years as a decoration until I get some no claims and decide to drop it in.... Would like to have 120brake in a mk3....

Thats what i meant, thanks!

What cars are these fitted too? is it also in the Mk3 Golf?

Yeah it's a mk3 golf enigne. (and is probably fitted to ventos as well) It's also fitted to early mk2 ibizas and cordobas.

The extra inch doesn't cause any problems unless you have a really tall induction system. Bike carbs should be fine as they are sideways carbs and not top down like say, a mk2 replacement weber. your biggest problem is bulkhead clearance with setups like that.

well id be looking to keep the engine spi as I'm not overly bothered about overal power, its the torque that counts imo

You'll be fine for clearance with the standard system. As for torque, The ABU has quite a low compression ratio (9.3:1) . If you find an AEA or AEE first, (9.8:1) go with that and then look for some ABU ancillaries. I think I have a spare inlet and a TB for one here actually. :) Oh, and a head. Just no block. :unibrow:

is the AEA compatible too then? is it as easy to physically bolt in?

would the ABU mono injector easily connected to the standard loom / fuel lines?

sorry for all the questions :)

Which loom do you mean? The AEA is the same up top as the the ABU more or less, so should work fine. The bottom end is a bit different, there's an extra tensioner for cambelt and you'll need a newer, more compact, starter motor. But everything else is the same I think.

my standard car loom, the one currently running my 1.3 spi in the car at the mo

Be reet.
