When the 1997 1.0 polo i was looking to buy was ticking over it made a very clattery noise that came from the exhaust.

I was told that this is a normal characteristic of these 1.0 polos but is this true or should i just walk away.

Btw, the car has a new exhaust middle section.

Definatly not a characteristic.

Not sure what could be causing it without hearing it. Might just be a loose exhaust...

Its like a loud clatter, a bit like an old diesel tbh and it disapears when you rev it.

My friend said it had a new mid section when he looked over it and that it was 'the cat'.

My dad thinks its the silencer but i thought surely if it was the silencer the noise would remain even when revving?

If it is the back box how much might it cost??

If it's coming from the exhaust I personally wouldn't walk away.

Well it seems to be.

I looked on euro parts and the rear box is about 23 quid.

I honestly cant see it costing that much to fit either and it should be sorted out.

Could the clattery noise be the cat??

If it's the cat it's going to cost more than a new backbox as they're not cheap.

Definetly sounds like the exhaust though, have a check see that nothings loose.

I had the same noise on my 6n, it was the exhaust mount just behind the rear axle, hitting the side (you could see where it had been hitting) , so we trimmed it off by about 1 cm and now its fine :)

New manifolds are pricey, but studs are cheap, so I'd replace them first

If the rest of it's ok than yes, well worth it.

well as i have said on my previous post, 'first car advice', it just needs the rust sorted out around the arches, sills and above the windscreen and sort out the misfire with new spark plugs and dizzy cap.

Should i give him a call then and tell him that il go for it before he sells it?????

For a £650 quid car if it was me personally I would go for it.

Rite then, il have a final wee chat with my dad about it - and then i'l tell you my decsion.

say for instance the whole bludy exhaust needed changed for some freak reason, how much might i be looking at?

Mine wasn't clattering at all, the exhaust was blowing from the silencer and wasn't able to repair so had a new one.

I think that the rust is more to worry about to be honest, it can be pretty expensive to sort out if you do it properly, maybe have a another look around cos you should be able to get a mk4 polo for that kind of money without all the rust problems.

It's really down to you and if you personally think the work is going to be worth it.

So i could get a new exhaust and good looking back box for 150.

And i was watching wheeler dealers or sumthing yesterday and he says anybody could fit one with a set of axle stands and basic tools.

He even showed how to fix rusty arches on a red toyota.

i couldn't believe my luck lmao.

However i just dont want to throw good money after bad.
