I don't like clippers as they're more of a mk2. Not being funny but it IS a girls car- hence why I'm also looking to buy one, possibly this week. :)

One with a tatty roof could be got for cheaper and replacements aren't expensive at all now. Good and bad points are the same as any other golf of that age really- the better the bodywork and the service history the more you'll pay.

If you're going to buy one do it soon as as the weather gets better the prices will get higher.

it'll never be as good as a tintop equivalent due to losing some scructural strengh and also inducing skuttle shake at speed, but i'm sure its still going to feel like a GTI at heart, I'm sure even tho i wouldnt be caught dead driving a cabby, i could probably own you in a race, in some spirited back road racing.

in all honesty, the mk1s are relatively cheap, parts are widely available, handling is very good even with limited mods (front lower brace and some polys, no need for coilies really), easy to fix, maintain and the 8v engines are non-interferance so if you snap the cambelt you cant smash pistons into valves...

car vs car, id put my money on a golf cabby gti licking a polo gti round some twisties...

the cabby driving is obviously going to be hairless or a big girls blouse, but if it were fast and the furious vin diesel would fit the role personally!

there are loads of cabbys on ebay, and loads of tintops knocking about, people seem to think that they are rare as fubar, but theres just plently of choice, its hard to find a proper good un and helps if your handy wiht bodywork or can or knows someone who can use a welder!

roofs tend to be major bad-points for cabbies, the best finds are those with plently of spares, the owners will normally clear their garages when they sell you a car which means plently of goodies for re-sale which can somethings fully negate the cost of the car :-D

i have noticed a few cabbys on ebay some near me are rather rusty beyond repair very rat

No that's wrong, it's just a matter of you get what you pay for. I've seen plenty of mk1 golfs and mk2 polos with less rot than some late mk3 and mk4 polos.

I went to look at one last week- had no interior and needed a fuel pump to run but the bodywork was pretty sweet save a few rust spots round the wing mirrors. Was cheap as well, it's just I found a better value one in a nicer colour, which I should hopefully be picking up tomorrow. :)

My mk2 gti is going to sleep til next year, can't bring myself to part with it just yet.

having owned both and driven a few more, the cabby is nothing like the hard top. heavier, slower, dont handle well. still a good drive though. its just the mk1 gti hard top is superb, so chopping the roof off and adding strengthening beams undernath is going to take the driving sharpness away. i think the cabs are cool. my mate just bought one. looks awesome on 9x15 rs's. and feels solid with fk coilies on. was big money though! but its straight as an arrow

should never pay more than a onnner for a cabby unless its ultra low miles and minty mint,

they pop up in the local papers and exchange hands for 800-1000, last one my mate bought was an 80ker and was mint!

got mine last night, it's fackin sweeet! Well happy with it. We just cruised to my mam's with the roof down.
