Today the guy was supposed to be round to finally sort the gearbox out on my car (been off the road for 3/4 months), he's been dicking me around of late but I didn't complain as I was getting it done for a good price (£350). I've had the gearbox for a couple of weeks now, in the car and he's always conveniently busy or just doesn't answer his phone. When we fitted the gearbox, she had no oil, no probs I thought. Bought the best semi-synth from halfords, went to fill her up only to find the filler was in a different position. Turns out he'd given me a different box, no problem I thought, as long as he's done what he'd supposed to have done and it works. Found the filler on the side, filled her up and started the car. Made a racket no better than my original f*cked gearbox, plus I can't select reverse and 5th (although this could be the linkage is out and needs re-aligning) whines like mad and goes when you press the clutch. Now, what's the chances he's just given me a second hand gearbox from a breakers and just cleaned the outside, passing it off to me as rebuilt?? Tosser.

One question though, does anyone know what the three torx screws on the front are for as these were loose, we weren't sure what they were for so just tightened them up.

Could be worse. My dad's 2003 Volvo S60 T5 just got serviced and the SRS Warning light turned off. Charged £150 for the service and £150 for 2.5 hours labour.... then he added a list of things my dad needs to returned to him to get fixed when he can afford it: brake servo whine, 2 trackrods need fixed, and rear bushes.... £1400 soon?

All I can say is it's a Polo and there'll be plenty of boxes available for it so go for it... get the Haynes manual and a few good tools and you're sorted!!

Did the guy who fitted it for you sort the gear box too? If so thats why he was so cheap. Have a word with him and tell him to sort it. If you got the box from a breakers you should have some sort of warranty on it

err guy sounds like a cowboy fella, go down then take some big mates and sort it out, without bashing his face in...

you have heard the saying before I'm sure,

you pay peanuts you get monkeys

You've paid your money already, there is little incentive for "the guy down the road" to do it again for free just because he's done a bad job.

Unless you have an invoice or receipt from him you have very little ground to stand on.

Realistically you'll have to use this as experience, the chances are you won't see your money back and your not going to see him fixing your car.

I would suggest that you bit the bullet and paid a local garage to do the fix, source you're own gearbox, off of ebay or something if needs be, you'll at least have some time span to get the new gearbox in an working and the threat of bad feedback and a refund through Paypal clais if there are problems.

Small local garages rely upon reputation and as a business can be reffered to or sued as any work done sale can be traced through the records, however without supplying the parts, they can only be aqcused of poor worksmanship, not fitting dodgy parts.
