I need to get some breakdown cover as I'll be doing longer distances with the Polo for going to work.

I've heard people have problems with trying to get recovered when their vehicle is lowered and some breakdown companies refusing to get a flat bed out to you or charginging a hefty premium.

So ladies and gents who do you recommend? and post your good and bad expereinces.

I'm with the RAC and when i call them out i just tell them on the phone that i'll need a flatbed because of my lowered suspension, they always send one out with no problem and no extra charge

I agree, RAC had no problems when sorting my car and its low as fook!

Recommend RAC too. I work for Porsche and we use RAC, they have a special fleet of flat beds for sports cars/lowered cars. Just if you do breakdown (hope you dont tho) just say that the vehicle is lowered.

same, rac were brilliant, guy was a good laugh n liked the van, even though the chassis wasnt that low the exhaust was fucked at the time so i told them that n they said no worries n sent a flatbed

I'm also looking for some breakdown cover now that I've taken my car to uni. By reading the above posts I will look into the RAC, but as Clubpolo members do we not get discounted rates from AA?

make sure you read your RAC cover though as i recebtly had a breakdown and they would only take me 10 miles when to complete my journey i needed to go 20 and they wouldnt take me without charging quite alot for 10 miles !!

Mate had his slammed Rado towed by them...bit embarrising, the lowloader had problems!! Great people though, good service, personally never used them, but I have the cover..

AA been good to me, cars look pimp on the back of trailers too:

ino when i got the GT the lady at the insurance said, would you like brake down cover, am like noooooo it'l not break down.......really were famous last words!

Thanks for the advice guys... in the end I went with the RAC with roadside assistance and recovery to any UK destination, I didn't bother with home start.

I did find the Club Polo AA discount would only give a 15% reduction, whereas by buying online with the AA you get 25% off. I spoke to them on the phone and they would only do one or the other of the discounts. So no joy there as it still worked out more than the RAC.

After speaking to a friend he recommended the RAC as they have Accident Care which recovers a vehicle after an accident, and as far as he was aware with the AA they charge a fee as it is classed as an accident not a breakdown.

Other things to consider when shopping around...both the AA and RAC do not charge any extra for working on a car by the roadside beyond 1hr, be aware some other companies charge after the first hour!

Yep when I spoke to the RAC they said they would send a flat bed if required.

Whilst the woman from the AA said she'd check...went away for a few moments and came back and said it wouldn't be a problem as all their tow trucks can handle lowered cars... I doubt that is true when my car was really low I couldn't get a standard jack underneath and my lowering was no where near some of the other guys on the forum definitely a need for a flat bed recovery truck.

same here, had to leave me car with an 'rac approved' garage in manc and i got ripped off by them to the max

wanted £150 to tow my car from oxford road in manc to the garage i go to in preston :(

I'm with RAC and i can only reccomend them, think i'm some sort of family membership. when i broke down i got taken on a flatbed truck from leicester to reading then i had the car picked up few days later and taken to a garage!

really good service i found and both times they were with me within the hour!

my dad a mechanic for the aa he has been for 23 years and still is and hes towed many of lowered cars in the past...

his mk2 golf gti has been lowered lots and when it broke downthe van towed it back without a problem.

RAC have never let me down and look how manytimes my polo broke down last year lol

Both the RAC and the AA have happly bought out a flatbed. No probs with them, and the people have been carefull when loading/unloading the car.

I'm with the AA and although i haven't needed a trailer ride home (yet - got close tho!), th eguy who came out when my gearbox died in london was a gem and soon had us rolling. Even gave me directions to get back on the M25 asap.

Mines payed for though through my bank account so its only £5 a month!
