my cars a write off

Featured Replies

I've just found out the polo's a Cat C write off

what do you need to do to put a Cat C write off back on the road ??

how would this affect a future claim

what would the value of a fixed Cat C be

and is it worth fixing a Cat C car ??

please help

pic's now up on post 29

all it needs to put it back on the road is a Mot and a V.I.C check

reduces the value quite a bit. cat C means structural damage and requires a VIC test before it can be put back on the road.

CAT C means un-economical write off... not necesarily structural damage. Do you own the car or are you looking to buy? In theory, my clutch going on my polo would make it a CAT C as a clutch fitting from VW would cost £550... more than the car is worth. Argue your point if you own it, go to a garage and get a quote to fix it for less than the price of the car...

this happened to my capri, a van hit it but luckily someone saw it and took the number plate! ripped off the back bumper and put a ruddy great dent in it! Insurance for the van valued it at £750 (fucking mugs!) and repairs to be about £800  thus renering it a CAT C! i went to my local cappa garage and they quoted it at £350 for the work, and the cars value at £1500! so, i eventualy got a cheque from the other parties insurance and fixed it myself (half hour with a hammer and a lump of wood, spray of apint, good as new! and went bumperless 8-) )

good luck dude!

cat anything means it has been catagorised ie write off aka un economical repair.

cat d is paint and or panel damage, does not require anything to go back on the road.

cat c is structual and so requires vic test after repair.

cat a+b cannot be put back on the road.

Cat C is not necissarily structural damage, you will find a lot of insurers are catagorising older cars as cat C now regardless of damage there usually simply too expensive to repair.

Also a VIC check is nowhere near as drastic as you will think, the DVLA simply check all your chassis numbers etc and compair the car against the original engineers reports to make sure the damage is where it says it is etc before they will issue you a V5. Its just to stop people ringing cars and/or using stolen partrs to repair damaged cars.

I think a VIC check is about £35 but you get your V5 for free, if you car was a Cat D you still have to pay £25 for your log book.

Heres the list from a Salvage company I use quite a lot.

Category A

A vehicle which has been written off and must be totally destroyed.

Category B

A vehicle which has been written off from which spare parts may be salvaged, but the body shell must be crushed and the car should never return to the road.

Category C

A damaged vehicle which the insurer has decided not to repair, but which could be repaired and returned to the road.

Category C vehicles require a VIC inspection. Recorded at DVLA and HPI.

Category D

A minimal damaged vehicle which the insurer has decided not to repair, but which could be repaired and returned to the road.

Category X

A vehicle which is not listed as being damaged on the HPI register, or one which may have very little damage. These vehicles may have been stolen and then recovered.

Vehicles categorised C require a VIC test before the DVLA will issue a new registration document. This will then be noted on the V5C.

A Cat C vehicle will obviously not be worth the same value as a non damaged car, so I guess it all depends how attached to your car you are or not. Also if your buying it back from the insurance company you will get it reasonably cheaply because they simply dont want the hassle of recycling or selling you car on, although most have there own prefered salvage yards anyway.

cat c is structual and so requires vic test after repair.

That technically isnt true, on a VIC they dont check the car at all in regards to repairs or damage this is/has already been done by an insurance engineer.

A VIC (Vehicle Identity Check) is simply the DVLA/VOSA making sure the car is what it appears to be, they check chassis numbers etc and if any repairs have been done they may check serial numbers from the parts used to make sure not from a stolen car.

As explained here.

and you only get one shot at a VIC test too!!!!

89ralleye has it right! read my post about trying to avoid being CAT C, i managed it!

really, are you claiming off your insurer for a worn clutch..... ummmm nope

cat C is as said an uneconomical repair - nothing more, you can have cat D cars with structural damage - structural meaning it would need jigging etc.

as your vehicle has already had a total loss payment by the insurer it is now worth next to nothing to them.

and you only get one shot at a VIC test too!!!!

quite obvious as if you fail a identity check - you have failed to prove the cars identity - i.e re shelled with stolen shell etc..

VIC checks are nothing to worry about if your doing nothing wrong

no not i'm claiming my clutch dipshit, i said 'in theory'... ie if my clutch were to go, i would probably break the car as it would become an in-economical repair!

As richie_stix says its worth fighting, there are loads of posts over on the Volkszone forums about people with Camper and beetles who are doing this all the time.

Insurance companies dont want to get involved with older cars, I remember one case with a camper the guy got his own quotes from various VW restorers and presented them to his insurance company and did it that way. The insurance company wanted to right it off since they will just ask a standard insurance approved bodyshop and they dont want to get involved with a rusty old camper..

As it turned out the guy won, camper was repaired and as a bonus he had a lot of extra work done that the restorer had just billed into the insurance quote. ( Not that I would condone this in any way ;) )

thanks 89rallye

but as i'm TPFT i'm going to get jack shit for it

so it was your fault you crashed and thats why he beat your dad up. theres no shame in having an accident, the reason everyone detests you is because you've come on here all mr high and mighty it wasnt my fault attitude. (amongst alot of other things.)

no it wasn't my fault the insurance accuser for my insurance company agreed with use about the damaged to my car

if you look at the damages to my car you can see i didn't rear end the bmw

i dont care if you triple backflipped into the bmw, that doesnt proove its not your fault. you could have driven your front wing into the back of him which is the decision your insurance company have come to.
