bike carbs on 16v afh

Featured Replies

Right I brought a whole set up from somebody off of this forum around a month ago, and since them have had no luck with gettin these running properly! They are cbr600 carbs which are on my 1.4 16v afh! The car starts and idles nicely for a few minutes but then just cuts out, as for when I try to drive it, it will drive for about 10seconds and then starts to run like shit (as if its miss-firing)! So I turn the car off, and then re-start the engine, which it then runs fine for a further few seconds! I have all of the fuelling setup correctly so I'm lost! The previous owner of the carbs didn't run them with air filters so I have put them into a bike shop to be stripped and cleaned! What are the benifits of up jetting the carbs?? What size do I go for? I've seen that quite a few people are using 145x4 or150x4! Would doing this help the problem and is it something I need to do?? Just need them to run well enough to get the car to a rr to be setup properly! Any help would be appreciated, just want my car back! Cheers steve

You need to get it set up on a rolling road really dude.

Have a read in the bike carb thread http://www.clubpolo.co.uk/forum/index.php?showtopic=160802

I had a little look through but there's so much to go through lol! The only problem with getting it onto a rolling road is that its 40 miles away so it would need to be taken on a trailer, which nobody seems to have lol

right...I have still got the same issues as I've had for the past 5 weeks with my car! The car will drive for about a mile then starts runnin as if it has a missfire! I have just paid for the carbs to be cleaned out, new jets and air filters also, which has cost me 180quid! But the car seems to still run the same! I can get the car to a rolling road next week but its going to have to be trailered there which is going to cost me £80 plus the charge for the carbs to be set up! But obviously if the car doesn't run properly still it will also have to be trailered back! Does anybody have any ideas before I do this, I'm aware that it will need setting up properly anyway but I would have rather been able to take a slow drive there as its only 40 miles away from me! When the bloke cleaned the carbs out and replaced the jets he said that 1 of the jets were completely blocked and the others partially blocked so I thought it would have solved the problems but apparenlty not! Any help would be appreciated! Steve

Can you talk us through your fuel system?

What pump, regulator, tee pieces (if any), fuel hose size, and where your inlet and return lines on the carbs are.

What ignition system are you using, and what timing are you running?

I havnt changed the fuel pump, its just the standard fuel pump! I'm using the t-piece method which I believe is correct! The fuel lines to the car t's off which goes into to pipes which then goes into the carbs (1 at each end)! What do you mean what timing am I running? I brought the whole set-up off of a moderator from this forum who had the set-up on his car and he said it ran fine?? Sorry if I've not explained very well! Cheers for the reply

Sorry I forgot to add..I havnt used a regulator as I was told I didn't need to use 1 because I was using the T piece method!

sounds to me like you need more fuel pressure?

i had the same problem on my bike carbs when i forgot to swich my pump on! got a few hundred metres away and started misfiring/spluttering and losing power

That's exactly what it does..so I have to pull over and turn the car off and the restart it, then it is fine for about a minute then missfiring etc! Do you think I need a regulator then??

How have you got the T peice set up?

And if you have fitted a mk2 dizzy you will most likely need to time it up again..

You need to bridge the fuel pump relay to an ignition live. Swapping out the ECU etc for the mk2 setup confuses the relay (immobiliser issue) and it cuts out after a minute or so and stops pumping fuel round.

I had the same problem on my old 16v and it took us a couple of weeks to figure it out.

If your looking at the T then I have the fuel coming in on the left hand side of the horizontal part...which goes across to the return..then I have the fuel into the carbs off of the vertical part of the T! If you get what I mean?? Lol and sounds stupid but how do you bridge the relay? Cheers

Anybody know what number the fuel pump relay is in my valver?? Got some cable redi to bridge the relay but dunno what number it is lol

You probably want to change the T setup

Fuel pump  ------------ Carbs
               |
               |
               |
          Fuel Return

Cool.. it is best to have it plumbed the way I have in the diagram as fluid will take the path of lease resistance. In this case straight on. Meaning that most of the fuel will fill the carbs and then when full the fuel will return to the tank. Fitting it the other way can lead to fuel starvation as a few people on here have found out.

No problem, glad you're sorted :D My car was off the road for about 6 weeks while we figured that out

That's how long mines been off the road for...it was well nice to drive it finally lol! Alredi noticed the difference on the fuel tho, but its well worth the extra dollar! Going to hopefully have them balanced and put on a rolling road this weekend so ill post the results of that in the FAQ! Again thanks for all of the help!
