steering wheel not straight

Featured Replies

When i put my 6n2 steering wheel on polo, i forgot to make sure the wheels were straight.

however i have given up with trying to get the airbag off so i was wondering is there another way to sort it out without taking the steering wheel off?

There is, loosen the toe arms, set the steering wheel straight, then track your wheels using gauges with the wheel in that position. But your rack position won't be central even though your wheel position gives the impression that it is, so from what I can work out, I think you will end up with less lock in one direction than the other..

Just leave your iarbag off why your setting it up. Best thing to do is drive in a straight line with the wheel on the piss and come to a holt. dont turn just stop and then take wheel off and rotate it.

bit late now he's put the air bag on :p

I feel his pain though, mines about 2 degrees out and it drives me insane but i cant get my airbag off either :/

Take the time to get it back out then. un-plug battery and wait 10 mins, Two screw on the back and pull afaik.

Its not bro, the origional 6n wheel is 2 screws but the 6n2 is some dodged spring clips, got the 2 holes in the back but no access to the clips, gonna pop up to VW after work as its on the way home and see if they use a special tool or if they just have a certain technique for it

All you need is a screwdriver bent 90deg or an allen key might work

yeah cheers for the help, i found that picture before but i cant for the life of me get them off i tried for an hour the other day. i think i might have to pop to my local garage and see what they say then

I managed to get one of the clips undone in about 10 mins then 4 hours later the other still hasn't come of so i just cut the steering wheel of and put my Momo on hahaha

VAG airbags like that are a piece of piss to get off, you can even buy the bent screw driver

what is this

buy
that you speak of? :S

Or bend a screw driver....slide in, twist 90 degrees and it pops out?

oh you twist it? probably where I'm going wrong then, I've just been trying to wedge it :')

ill give it a crack when i get in tonight :)

Why not pay to have the tracking done and the wheel will be straignt and ni tyre wear !

if you read its just the wheel thats off centre not the tracking thats out, what you should do is centre the rack, fit the wheel centrally then have the tracking done.

To do this, you need 3 equal width strips of tape,

Stick one strip on the top of the dash at the centre of the dials/clocks/bump on dash.

then turn the wheel full left lockand hold it on full lock, stick a strip of tape on the wheel dead inline with the strip on the dash, then rotate the wheel all the way to full right hand lock, again stick a strip of tape dead inline with that on the dash.

turn the steering wheel back so wheels are pointing forwards, your tape will be in different positions with the wheel central, turn the wheel so both pieces of tape are level. this is the central position of your rack.

if you then remove the wheel and put it straight ahead, without moving the column the wheel will be central on the rack, then adjust the tracking accordingly, a well setup car should have an equalish amount of threads showing on either track rod end, however its a bit silly saying that with a polo thats probably not got a correctly aligned subframe and how a slight variance in the camber adjustment on a 6n effects the toe.

the rack centralisation is a good idea, however i highly highly doubt a 6n has a variable ratio rack bar, so youd just end up with more lock one way than the other, wheras its critical on some cars as the variable rate steering racks, youd end up with more sensitive steering lock one way than the other.

look at the diagram above, you can see theres a bit metal ring which acts a spring clip, pop that off and your away.

it may pay to invest in around 99p for a small mirror on a stick so you can see what youre doing

because as previously mentioned the steering column would still be over rotated one way giving you less lock in one direction

p.s. cheers harris i gave it a twist, took a couple of attempts but its done :)

good lad, honestly the stress some airbags cause me haha, trouble is i work mainly on prototype vehicles so theres not really any instructions or documents to follow to get them out! and all of the dynamics 'tuning' cars i work on are constantly being setup so stuff like wheel alignment and centralising wheels and shit is kinda becoming something i could do whilst asleep haha

that sounds pretty tedious tbh, spose once youve got it off though you'll remember it

its part of the fun though, working on new cars with no info, trying to work out the best way of doing things, you soon get rapid at doing stuff, can do 4 wheel alignments including rack centralisation, caster and camber in about 25 mins these days haha :(

you'll need a crane to lift that head out of bed in a morning if it gets any bigger

seriously though thats pretty impressive, i think even with all the gear id be looking a good hour to do like each wheel :x

and as for the whole "trying to work out the best way" scenario, thats what I'm like with the polo, which usually goes wrong :p

haha nah man like anything aint it, do it often and you soon improve your ways, just simple shit like knowing exactly what tools to get out ready and that saves time, to a lot of people a car is just something they do on the side, and may work in an office or whatever (where id probabnly be quite clueless) but i do cars in spare time, and all day at work haha.

yeah 6n's are a pain to setup though, i made a tool for adjusting the camber under the weight of the car before on a pit/ramp lol.

yeah thats what i mean, we'll have a new model come in, and it will all be a new design and stuff, its good to get stuck in and crack on :)

I'm the one that just dosses around an office all day :p

looking all important and professional yet I'm just sat on CP alllllll day :p then i go home and tinker with the car :p just wish insurance would chill out and let me get on with the things i want to do without jacking up my premiums :p

bet its pretty sweet jsut cracking on with a new car and having your way with it :p bet its not as sweet if something gets broken on a prototype though :p

i also need to stop using that face ":P"

i think our prototypes are worth about £500k each in cost price but the amount of information/development we do with them is worth loadsss more, haha

£500,000.00 :retard:

thats pretty mad, wouldnt like to have that kind of responsibility behind me 500k of car is a lot to have on your back :/

Then again i do run payroll for a very large company that i cant say who due to the official secrets act :ninja:

150,000 employees lives are the palm of my hand every month  and if i where to bugger up and them not get paid, well, you wouldnt get much pop through your door each morning :p

and no i dont own 150,000 paper boys! :paranoid:
