I currently have a problem with the drivers brake light staying half on , going out to sort today.

I have browsed the net looking for a part code , unless I'm being stuiped i cannot find it.

The person here seems to have got the parts direct from VW although its too late to phone and idealy i want then asap

The closest i have got is finding this:

I'm wanting to make my own harness so i dont have to butcher the wiring in the car.

The parts i am looking are these left and right , asuming male and female

Thought i would update my findings on this into one post encase people land on this page from google ect.

Wiring for the lights

there are two types of 9n light, left side reverse or twin reverse lights

Tutorial for left side single reverse lights:

only adjustments that need to be done is the passenger side tail lights....the driver side is the same so you dont need to change anything...its just a direct fit in....

Now, for the passenger side you will need alot of patients....Here is some info:

numbers 1 to 6 represent pin numbers marked on the side of the clips

Passenger Side-------------

9N WIRING

1 Brown =earth

2 Black white = indicator

3 Black/Red = brake

4 Black/blue = reverse

5 Blank

6 Grey/black = lights

9N3 WIRING

1 Empty

2 Reverse

3 Indicator

4 Ground

5 Brake

6 Lights

for twin reverse lights to single reverse light conversion:

wire the passengers side as above, then wire the drivers side as so:

9N WIRING

1 Brown

2 Blue/Black

3 Black/Red

4 Green/Black

5 Grey/White

6 Grey/Red

9N3 WIRING

1 Grey/Red

2 Black/Red

4 Green/Black

5 Grey/White

6 Blue/Black (or leave empty, wire isn't connected at this end anyway)

To change the wires around it was a case of

remove rear lights and bulb holders.

The clip its self has a flap which i just used the bar on the tool to pry open (although not needed) should just pull down

This flap also helps lock the terminals in i belive.

Pop the terminal release tool in and pull the wire out. I had some thin nose pliers as some where stuck

Then a case of sliding them back in the new arangment and putting the clip back

Pop lights back on and test all lights

Once the rear brake light is sorted , hopfully then will sand back the tint and redo but alot lighter. Although i swapped my bulbs over and the light seems to come though very well...

Are they the same shape? As it might be like 6nvs6n2 and the pins need changing around?

I think the pins can be changed, although i was wanting to make my self some adaptors like above as it would be easier when I'm swapping lights around and as as the plug seems far back i didnt really want to touch it encase i leave my self in a prediciment lol , Going to have a look today

It might end up being easier to just sea the pins over, as I don't see it being easy to get the female connector part on the left, the male part on the right is easy enough and will come with the pins (breakers yard), although if you had that part then you can get male pins and just have them loose and push them in separately..?

I did a similar thing for the interior lights and this worked fine, just make sure that you tape up or heats kink the ends of the connectors.

Managed to get out the plug a bit more so now i have room to mess around with it.

Your right , Looks like buying a terminal relese tool and moving the pins will be easier. Shouldnt take too long either. Now time to get down and polish these rear lights

If you have athin flat head screwdriver, like something you would use on your glades, then you can press in the little metal tabs and withdraw then pins.

Saves getting a special tool.

Luckily the guy 1 door down my row with a slammed turbo'd a3 had the tool , he pulled up and i asked him.

I used the tool in the end which he lent me and the wires where swapped round in under 5 mins.

Was just a case of getting clubpolo up on my phone for the wiring

Remove lights

Unclip the flap on the connector

Slap in the tool and pull terminals out

Arange them and pop lights back in

was supprised at how easy it really was...

Where all the clips the same? So just plug and tighten up the wing but? Sounds like a really worthwhile mod as the round lights look a lot nicer IMO and would update the rear end.
