Anyone fitted a servo to a mk2?

Featured Replies

As above really. Thinking of going down this route when the engines next out (i know, it's only just gone in!). Has anyone got any pictures of this on a RHD polo? From what I understand you need to weld the panel from an mk3 on to mount the servo on. Could one be fabbed up instead if the panel wasn't available?

Liz has one from a metro or something.

Its really not worth it.

there was a link somewhere to someone who had rebuilt there whole engine bay bulk head to fit a mk2f servo setup.

It really looked like a lot of work.

Other approach is attach some lead weights around you ankle and go for long walks, build up those puny legs.

Really? How does that fit?

Why is it not worth it? I'm fully aware they don't make the brakes better but there is such a difference between the 9n and the loon, everytime I get into the loon i'm horrified at the difference of the brake feel. I nearly went up the back of someone the other day, and if it wasn't for the ease of which I can fully engage the brakes on the 9n, I'd have been in that other guys boot. I don't want to have that feeling when driving the saloon as I'm sure I'd have binned it

Really? Surely its just a case of welding/bolting the a mounting plate onto the bulkhead to make the servo sit proud enough to mount it

That'll be a BRM kit. I had one about 4 years ago and they were like rocking horse shit then, virtually no chance on earth of finding one now.

The problem is, there's not really a lot of room on that side of the bay. I've seen a linkage used across the bulkhead to run the master cylinder on the other side... like a (mk1) golf. Failing that, some fairly intense cutting and welding and run a mk3 bulkhead section.

You learn to love mk2 brakes after a while, once you convince yourself they're not really trying to kill you.

Give katpolomk2 a shout, I know she did it when her and her dad put the gt lump in her bready

I suppose a remote servo could be an option.

I've driven plenty of mk2s and am aware the brakes are pretty archaic. And mine should be better as I've got larger discs all round. I just like the on/off feel of a servo for security

I've read through that build Cymro, thanks. Forgotten how much work was involved. I wonder if you could space the servo out from the bulkhead much like Mark Crox has done with the MC. I guess that would mean it sits very far into the engine bay though

The brakes are fine when you get used to them. Unless you have toothpick legs.

This has been quite popular with most european manufacturers. The Polo chassis in question wasn't designed with provision for this though, and space is non-existent both sides of the bulkhead.

I've looked into it and i think i've found a selection of parts to make the job possible, but still not easy. I don't know if i'll bother because i'm fine without one on my car, i may yet do it to another MK1/2 if i take on a project once the nipper's in school.

The MK1/2 Escorts were like that - the servo was direct remote to the pedal but it sat at the front of the bay on the longest bracket!

If i could find a small servo, with the same mounting pounts, that would make things possible. Since the push rod is only a piece of bar threaded at one end, I'm sure it's possible to mount it further away from the bulkhead. Be ugly though

Got one on mine. Mk.3 servo, shortened and modified Mk.1 Golf cross linkage and an Audi 80 master cylinder.

Works well with the 256mm front brakes and braided hoses.

Ratsport do a remote servo kit for around £150 I think.

mate has a remote servo in his mini. big improvement apparently, dont know the make though

I've just had a look at the ratsport one and it's only single circuit because it goes inline after the master. Bit of a bummer because Polos use three master cylinder outlets :(

And I have 4!

More details and photos if possible 86c. Wondering what the area where the original m/c was looks like, as well as how it's all lined up and mounted etc

sorry I've just seen this thread, mines off the car now as the master cylinder got damaged in the fire, id be happy to take pictures and measurements etc in case anyone wants to copy it, MC is off a metro, not sure about the servo, reservior is metro and the mounting plate is is made by BRM

Liz: Fire????

Id be intrested in the measurements and picture.

mk1 Golf/Scirocco transfer bar's gotta be the way to go. On Liz's car the GT inlet had to be modified to clear the servo, so I'd imagine you'd have issues with carbs too.

I don't know if you'll ever get a nice solid pedal feel on an old polo, but I supposes rear discs might help with that? How are you finding the rear discs? Handbrake work on hills ok?

IIRC car was being welded and caught fire

Yeh poor Bluey is in a bit of a sorry state :-( not sure he will be back for this years Polo show but i don't want him off the road for too much longer makes me :crybaby: looking at him. still I'm lucky to have him at all as it could have been a whole lot worse! very nasty experience that i don't want to ever be repeated.

note to everyone that welds or has someone round to weld. GET A GOOD FIRE EXTINQUISHER!!!! i had an in car one but it didn't work, ended up relying on the garden hose!

His brake peddle did feel really nice and solid, didn't have the usual mk2 bit of spongyness in it, certainly a whole lot better than he was with the postage stamp brakes

Alan (poloace) initially fitted it. I'll get some pics

Any more on this? Id be interested in giving it a go. Fitted some VWII brakes with new discs and they are still shocking. And yes the discs and pads are worn in..
