Both front windows stopped working at the same time (I don't have electric rear windows), I've been told it's probably a fuse issue or a relay. I checked the window fuses in the driver's side of the dash and they both are fine. I'm not sure how to locate or access where the relay for the electric windows are though. If anyone can help with that it'd be great! Also, how do I test the relay? Can I just swap it with any other one in there (that looks the same) and see if it works?

Have a check of fuse 18 before doing anything else, it's this one:

 

The relays that drive the motors are within the control modules attached to each motor, soldered into the circuit boards, unfortunately.  

Although there are a number of reports of people fixing these units by changing relays and capacitors, I haven't yet had to do that to revive any of the ones I've mended.

 

Wires breaking in the rubber bellows between A-pillar and door can also obviously cause havoc with whatever item those wires feed, so if you can have a look in there, do so. Be careful of getting the rubber boot properly located back afterwards though, you don't want to create a water leak onto the connector(s) that wasn't there before.

 

@Pete1 Thanks a lot for the info, Pete.  I just checked the fuse (and it looked fine), but I'll leave checking the other things to another time when it's less dark and cold out!  Appreciate the help.

 

 

It's also worth putting the key in the door, turning it to unlock and holding it there, the windows should lower. You can close them again by holding the key in the lock position. 

 

That will at least let you know they're getting power. 

Hi @Yeti Thanks for the suggestion.  I tried it, it doesn't work, so I guess I'm not getting power?   Didn't even realise that was a thing that you could do!     Are there many things that could cause that?

 

I did forget to say, as long as the car has central locking.

 

It doesn't definitely mean there's no power to the motors, but it would have ruled a few things out if it had worked. 

 

Do the rest of the electrics in the door work ok? 

@Yeti It does have central locking, yeah.  The central locking works fine, apart from the driver's door which has been intermittent as to whether it unlocks from the key fob, or whether I have to use the key to unlock it.  This has been the case since I got it about 8 months ago now.  Never had a problem with the windows before though.  It's coincidence but I hadn't driven my car for 5 days and the rear left brake had locked up and the electric windows went.  I had a heavy car and it was a long drive back over xmas, plus it tipped it down the whole way.  Wondering if maybe the weight in the car finished my brakes off and the rain had something to do with the windows going?  Although it's not like it hasn't rained whilst the car's been sitting there before.

Hey, unfortunately not. You'd think I would have seeing as it was 3 years ago but here we are haha.

I can tell you that they did start working again in summer that year, but then stopped again and I don't think they've worked against since?

I guess it can't have been a fuse then or anything that had blown, otherwise I imagine it'd be very unlikely they'd start working again at a later date...

I did take a quick look at the wiring hidden underneath the rubber between the door and the car but couldn't see any obvious signs of damage.

Then I basically never got around to checking it out further, although it can be a little annoying at times!

If you get around to figuring out the problem with yours I'd love to hear it.

My daughters Polo has the windows both stopped working issue, although they stopped working within a day of eachither. I’ve changed the drivers side door switch and checked the fuse. I wondered if you could help? thanks
