Bosch part number. Other manufacturers (Denso etc.) hae different part numbers, but any motor factors worth their salt will be able to cross reference.

GT seats and interior fabric: Early ones (up to February 1993 at the latest, but maybe someone else can confirm) had black or grey 'Coloured sports check' cloth. Later ones had the nicer 'grey/black triangle cloth' which as the name implies, were small green, red, pink and blue triangles on a dark grey background. I could scan brochure images if that would help.

Also, GT's had specific wheel trims too, with the black centre caps.

The ECU relay is different on the GT & G40 models. The GT needs a 5 pin rather then a 4 pin which is what the CL uses. Without the 5 pin relay theres no spark or fuel pump prime.

Clutch cable : inboard end of G40 is heavily reinforced compared to standard. Standard cable still fits.

The G40 cylinder head looks the same as the GT but is different G40 has sodium filled exhaust valves for better valve cooling so its better at higher revs

GT runs a 2"external bore exhaust and G40's are 2.25"........ been a long time since i saw a standard version of either!

The g40 had two plugs as standard.

Bosch W 5 DTC. 0.7-0.9mm gap

VW part no: 101 000 005 AC

Plug change every 15000km

Bosch W 5 DPO. 0.7-0.9mm gap (longlife plug)

VW part no:101 000 006 AG

Plug Change every 30000km

The ignition timing should be set differently for the two plugs.

for the W 5 DTC timing is 3-7 degrees setting at 5 +/- 1 degree BTDC

And for the W 5 DPO the timing is 4-8 degrees, setting at 6 +/- 1 degree BTDC

Most people just use the w5dpo ones - its what the vw manual syas and what vw supply

ye i've never seen the dtc ones ? anywhere? if i knew there was another option i would have been askin lots of question to the clueless vw guy.

From what it states on elsa i think that the w5dtc plugs are listed for g40's up to 09/90 and the w5dpo's from 01/91.

Apart from that the only difference is that the w5dp0 is a longlife plug so its platinum tipped, not 100% on that though.

I am a a vw technician and I'm always getting my parts manager to search for g40 bits for myself. I will ask him about the w5dtc plugs.

I recently got a set of w5dp0's, the vw part number had been superseeded several times so they were originally listed as another named plug.

I will find out if this is the same for the w5dtc plug. If it is there will be another part number than the one i gave in my previous thread.

checked the Bosch W 5 DTC VW part no: 101 000 005 AC today.

It is specified for g40's only up to 89 model so the mk3 g40's can only use the w5dpo plug.

i forgot to add, the w5dtc plugs are about £4.50 + v.a.t per plug and are available from vw warehouse so will take 1 day to arrive at dealerships.

Mine had the early ones added from new and a dealer told me usually only an option on the GT model.

But there a bastard to keep clean plus the drivers seat support (RH one) and back has frayed due to the loose weave design catching on trouser pocket zips. lol

Despite this they go quite well with the cars color plus at the last show outing a few people commented on how rare the interior color was, but wasn't too sure to believe them or not.

G40s also have larger rear wheel cylinders in the standard drum.

Are the Conrods the same as each other and the other 1.3's ?

How do the combustion chambers differ on the GT head as opposed to the normal 1.3 head, or are they the same with only the pistons difering?
